This year’s theme for Basque Cultural Day, a biennial event hosted by the Basque Educational Organization (BEO) in San Francisco, was about “Kaliforniako Euskaldunen Atzak” – Basque Footprints in California. On October 26th, several CBC members took part in presenting for the day’s events: Marianna Etcheverria, Mitch Gariador, and Jeanette Bidart presented their findings on “Early Basque Presence in Southern California” an entertaining tale of wealthy land owners, an attorney, a monk, and a Basque newspaper published completely in Basque; Steven Gamboa presented “The Long Walk: Sheep Transhumance from Kern County to the High Sierra,” a discussion about Basque sheepherders of Kern County who drove their herd hundreds of miles on foot from the Central Valley and Mojave Desert to the High Sierras; and Nancy Zubiri, originally from the Bay Area presented her findings of early Basque presence in the San Francisco area,
culminating on the building of the Basque Cultural Center.
