The Chino Basque Club board has decided to wait until July to decide
whether or not we will be having a picnic this year.
At that time we will be able to make a more informed decision.
ISIDORE CAMOU 1939-2020
Isidore came to Chino from Irissarry, France in 1961. He worked as a milker for many years but he and his wife, Marie Claire would eventually buy and manage a motel in Riverside. Isidore was a dedicated husband and father. They would have five children and eventually 11 grandchildren. Most important to us, Isidore was the pillar of our Basque community. He became a member of the Chino Basque Club in 1976 and worked tirelessly ever since. He was instrumental in making sure we had a club house and was our main chef. Isidore was elected to the Board numerous times and along with his wife, Marie Claire, was the recipient of the Bizi Emankorra award. We shall miss his quiet, charming ways as well as his work ethic. Isidore has been an inspiration to us all. Our most sincere sympathies to Marie Claire, Frank, Alain, Patrick, Dominique, Louise and their families.
Unfortunately for the 2020 graduates, all ceremonies and year-end activities have been canceled. The Chino Basque Club felt these young people should be highlighted. Please click below to view a short video. We have 15 graduates who are either children of CBC members or are members in their own right.

EXPERIENCE BASQUE CULTURE
IN THE BASQUE COUNTRY – JULY 2020
What is Ateak Ireki?
Ateak Ireki means “open doors” in the Basque language, Euskara. The Ateak Ireki three week program is an opportunity for young people from the Basque diaspora in the United States to live, learn and experience real life in the Basque Country today.
NABO is excited to collaborate with this three-week immersion in Basque Culture in the Basque Country program, Ateak Ireki. The program is aimed at youth in our Basque American communities ages 16-25 to continue their engagement with our culture after they are no longer able to participate in Udaleku. The Ateak Ireki program dates in 2020 are from June 29th to July 19th. For more information Ateak Ireki website is now available and registration will open on February 1st, 2020. If you have any questions, please contact our NABO Ateak Ireki Coordinator Argia Beristain by clicking below.
…Mike and Jeanette Bidart, for the case of wine you donated to the Club. We are all most appreciative of your never-ending generosity!

This year’s theme for Basque Cultural Day, a biennial event hosted by the Basque Educational Organization (BEO) in San Francisco, was about “Kaliforniako Euskaldunen Atzak” – Basque Footprints in California. On October 26th, several CBC members took part in presenting for the day’s events: Marianna Etcheverria, Mitch Gariador, and Jeanette Bidart presented their findings on “Early Basque Presence in Southern California” an entertaining tale of wealthy land owners, an attorney, a monk, and a Basque newspaper published completely in Basque; Steven Gamboa presented “The Long Walk: Sheep Transhumance from Kern County to the High Sierra,” a discussion about Basque sheepherders of Kern County who drove their herd hundreds of miles on foot from the Central Valley and Mojave Desert to the High Sierras; and Nancy Zubiri, originally from the Bay Area presented her findings of early Basque presence in the San Francisco area,
culminating on the building of the Basque Cultural Center.
